ORCHA - the lesser known tourist destination of India.

Orcha, is a relatively unknown town in Madhya Pradesh just 15 km from Jhansi of Utter Pradesh. Orcha is the land which showcases the sumptuousness and magnificence of the mighty Bundelas dynasty. For the kind of architectural wonders that are seen in Orcha, I should say that it is not in the radar of many Indian and International tourists. MP tourism should do a lot to popularize this destination. People who visit Khajuraho can combine Orcha in their plan and visit this magnificent place.  

Ram Raja temple is the nucleus of all activities in Orchha. The legend behind this magnificent shrine is very fascinating. It says that the idol was temporarily installed in the palace premises and later on it was found that the deity resisted moving. So a makeshift temple was built around it and is known as Ram Raja temple. 

This holy shrine is considered to be unique for the reason that, here lord Ram is worshiped as Raja and the temple premises were formerly a palace. With the marble tiled courtyard, and the impressive architecture, the temple looks amazingly beautiful.

In this medieval city one can see lot of temples and Cenotaphs. Built by the Bundela rulers between 16^th & 17^th centuries, Orcha is on the banks of Betwa River.  Of the succeeding rulers, the most notable was Raja Bir Singh who built the exquisite Jehangir Mahal, a tiered palace crowned with graceful Chhatries. From here one can have a spectacular view of soaring temple spires and cenotaphs.

 

 

There is a painting of an elephant in one of the palaces, which is actually done with the seven images of the seven queens of Raja Bir Singh. Yes, he is supposed to have had seven wives and they all lived together in the Jahangir Mahal! Raj Bir Singh should have been excellent in women management skills!!! This painting is an ideal example of Bundela School of painting.

Jahangir Mahal has been so named to commemorate the visit of the mogul emperor Jahangir.

If someone is planning a visit to Kajhuraho, then you should certainly consider including Orcha in you plan!
